चंपूरामायण – बालकाण्ड – धर्म

उच्छैर्गतिर्जगति सिध्यति धर्मतश्चेत्
    तस्य प्रमा च वचनैः कृतकेतरैश्चेत् ।
तेषां प्रकाशनदशा च महीसुरैश्चेत्
    तानंतरेण निपतेत् क्व नु मत्प्रणामः ॥

ucChaiH gatiH jagati sidhyati dharmataH chet
    tasya pramA cha vachanaiH kRutaketaraiH chet ।
teShAm prakAshanadashA cha mahIsuraiH chet
    tAnantareNa nipatet kva nu mat praNAmaH ॥

It is well understood that a good death is obtained only by following Dharma through out the life. That is possible only by reciting and understanding the scriptures (including the Vedas). That is achieved only the help of the Gods on earth who illuminate the directions here with they jist of the scriptures (perhaps teachers). So, who else should I pay my salutations to if not for them?

मुद्रराक्षस – स्वातंत्र्य

इह विरचयन् साध्वीं शिष्यः क्रियां न निवार्यते
    त्यजति तु यदा मार्गं मोहात्तदा गुरुरंकुशः ।
विनयरुचयस्तस्मात्संतः सदैव निरंकुशाः
    परतरमतः स्वातंत्रेभ्यो वयं हि पराञ्मुखाः॥

iha virachayan sAdhvIm shiShyaH kriyAM na nivAryate
    tyajati tu yadA mArgaM mohAt tadA gururankushaH ।
vinayaruchayaH tasmAt santaH sadaiva nirankushAH
    parataramataH svAtaMtryebhyo vayam hi parAnmukhAH ॥

If a student is going down the correct path, no one will stop him. If he strays, a teacher will punish him with love. In that respect every one is free as long as they are going down the right path (of Dharma). What more freedom does one want? We are happy in this type of freedom which is in our teacher’s hands.

स्वाधीनं समतिक्रम्य मातरं पितरं गुरुम् ।
अस्वाधीनं कथं दैवं प्रकारैरभिराध्यते ॥

svAdhInaM samatikramya mAtaraM pitaraM gurum ।
asvAdhInaM kathaM daivaM prakAraiH abhirAdhyate ॥

Mother, father and teacher are the Gods that we see. What kind of religion is that which tells us to forget them and go behind Gods that we do not see?

सुभाषितसुधानिधि – गुरु

स्वर्गो धनं वा धान्यं वा विद्याः पुत्रास्सुखानि च ।
गुरुवृत्तनुरोधेन न किञ्चिदपि दुर्लभम् ॥

svargo dhanaM vA dhAnyaM vA vidhyAH putrAssukhAni ca ।
guruvRuttanurodhena na kinchidapi durlabham ॥

A place in heaven, wealth, peaceful mind, education, a good son – none of this is difficult to get for a person who serves his teacher well.

मंत्रे तीर्थे द्विजे दैवे दैवज्ञे भेषजे गुरौ ।
यादृशीं भावनां कुर्यात् सिद्धिर्भवति तादृशी ॥

mantre tIrthe dvije daive daivajne bheShaje gurau ।
yAdRushIm bhAvanAm kuryAt siddhirbhavati tAdRuShI ॥

Hymns, holy places, a brahmin, God, one who has realized God, Doctor and teacher. If you treat them well, you will benefit. If you treat them badly, you will suffer. What happens to you depends on how you treat them.
