शिशुपालवध – क्रोध

जितरोषरया महाधियः
    सपदिक्रोधजितो लघुर्जनः ।
विजितेन जितस्य दुर्मते
    र्मतिमद्भिः सह का विरोधिता ॥

jita roSharayA mahAdhiyaH
    sapadi krodha jito laghuH janaH ।
vijetena jitasya durmater
    matimadbhiH saha kA virodhitA ॥

Great wise men have overcome anger permanently. Simpler men have been consumed/conquered due because they succumbed to anger. There can never be a fair contest between the winners and the conquered or those who have overcome anger and those who can not.

शिशुपालवध – वाग्मि

अनिर्लोडितकार्यस्य वाग्जलं वाग्मिनो वृथा ।
निमित्तादपराद्धेषोर्धानुष्कस्येव वल्गितम् ॥

anirloDita kAryasya vAk jalam vAgmino vRuthA ।
nimittAdaparAddheShoH dhAnuShkasya eva valgitam ॥

When a job is not done after fully understanding it, it is going to fail. No amount of flowery words is going to make up for lack of preparation. An arrow that leaves the bow can not be made to hit the target by the words of the archer.

शिशुपालवध – मूर्ख

स्पृशन्ति शरवत्तीक्ष्णाः स्तोकमन्तर्विशन्ति च |
बहुस्पृशाऽपि स्थूलेन स्थीयते बहिरश्मवत् ||

Wise men are like arrows. They touch very lightly and penetrate by making the slightest slit. Even when explained with few words, they understand the entire picture. But idiots are like stones. They make huge impact but can not penetrate. Even after repeated explaining, they still can not understand.

शिशुपालवध – कोपः

सामवादाः सकोपस्य तस्य प्रत्युत दीपकाः |
प्रतप्तस्येव सहसा सर्पिषस्तोयबिन्दवः ||

- शिशुपालवध

When one is angry we should not try to placate him by talking sensibly and logically. Such talk will only aggravate his anger since it would show that his anger is not justified. If you sprinkle water over hot oil (or ghee) in the pan, it will agitate oil more.

सहजांधदृशः स्वदुर्नये
    परदोषेक्षणदिव्यचक्षुषः |
स्वगुणोच्चगिरो मुनिव्रताः
    परवर्णग्रहणेष्वसाधवः ||

Wicked people are blind to their own mistakes. But they have microscopic eyes when it comes to finding faults with others. They shout on top of their voices when they are talking about their qualities. However, they go mute when asked to describe other people’s virtues
