समयोचितपद्यमालिका – केवलमीश्वरेच्छा

भ्रमन् वनान्ते सुममंजरीषु
    नेंदिंदिरो गंधफलीं चुचुंब ।
सा किं न रम्या स च किं न रंता
    बलीयसी केवलमीश्वरेच्छा ॥

bhraman vanAnte suma manjarIShu
   nendindiro gandhaphalIm chuchumba ।
sA kim na ramyA sa cha kim na ramtA
   balIyasI kevalam eeshvara icChA ॥

A bee is going from flower to flower all over the forest. But it missed smelling the champaka flower. Isn’t champaka fragrant enough? It is. Does the bee not know it? It does. Yet, the bee missed it. All of this happens only because God wants it that way.

समयोचितपद्यमालिका – दारिद्र्यं कृषिभिः जितम्

जिता धनवता दारा जिता वस्त्रवता सभा ।
जितो ह्यभ्यागतो गोभिर्दारिद्र्यं कृषिभिर्जितम् ॥

jitA dhanavatA dArA jitA vastravatA sabhA ।
jito hyabhyAgato gobhiH dAridryam kRuShibhiH jitam ॥

One can get a good wife by being wealthy. One can control a gathering if he wears good clothes. Guests can be pleased if one has cows in his house. One can overcome poverty if they take up agriculture.

समयोचितपद्यमालिका – चिता चिंता

चिंतायाश्च चितायाश्च बिंदुमात्रं विशिष्यते ।
चिता दहति निर्जीवं चिंता दहति जीवनम् ॥

chintAyAshcha chitAyAshcha bindu mAtraM vishiShyate ।
chitA dahati nirjIvam chintA dahati jIvanam ॥

- samayochitapadyamAlikA

In sanskrit, there is only one difference in how you write ‘worry’ and ‘funeral pyre’ – just an extra dot. (चिता = funeral pyre चिंता = worry). While the pyre burns dead bodies, worry burns down life.

कष्टं खलु मूर्खत्वं कष्टं खलु यौवनेषु दारिद्र्यं ।
कष्टात् कष्टतरं किं परगृहवासः परान्नं च ॥

kaShTam khalu mUrkhatvam kaShTam khalu yauvaneShu dAridryam ।
kaShTAt kaShTataram kim paragRuhavAsaH parAnnam cha ॥

It is difficult being stupid and poor while young. But the most difficulty is when you have to take refuge in someone else’s house and eat his food.

अधोऽधः पश्यतः कस्य महिमा नोपचीयते ।
उपर्युपरि पश्यन्तः सर्व एव दरिद्रति ॥

adho adhaH pashyataH kasya mahimA na upachIyate ।
upari upari pashyantaH sarva eva daridrati ॥

If you always look downwards (people less privileged than you) then anyone can feel great about himself. If one only looks above, then he will always feel miserable. It is all about perspectives.
