पञ्चतंत्र – मित्रभेद – राजा

धवलान्यातपत्राणि वाजिनश्च मनोरमाः ।
सदा मत्ताश्च मातंगाः प्रसन्ने सति भूपतौ ॥

dhavalAnyAtapatrANi vAjinashcha manoramAH ।
sadA mattAshcha mAtangaaH prasanne sati bhUpatau ॥

If the King is kept happy you can enjoy everything. There will be white umbrellas, horses, damsels and raging elephants. It is in our best interests to keep him happy.

पञ्चतंत्र – मित्रभेद – गोप्यता

दारेषु किंचित्स्वजनेषु किंचि-
    द्गोप्यं वयस्येषु सुतेषु किंचित् ।
युक्तं न वा युक्तमिदं विचिंत्य
    वदेद्विपश्चिन्महतोऽनुरोधात् ॥

dAreShu kinchit svajaneShu kinchit
    gopyam vayasyeShu suteShu kinchit ।
yuktaM na vA yuktam idam vicintya
    vaded vipashchin mahato anurodhAt ॥

One must hide a little secrets from wife, relatives, friends or children. Not everyone need to be told everything. A wise man must think ‘to tell or not to tell’ a lot according to the task at hand.

पञ्चतंत्र – मित्रसंप्राप्ति – प्रीतिलक्षणम्

ददाति प्रतिगृह्णाति गुह्यमाख्याति पृच्छति ।
भुंक्ते भोजयते चैव षड्विधं प्रीतिलक्षणम् ॥

dadAti pratigRuhNAti guhyam AkhyAti pRucChati ।
bhunkte bhojayate chaiva Shad vidham prIti lakShaNam ॥

The following six are the tell-tale signs of love – sharing (giving and taking), telling and keeping secrets, sharing food (feeding and being fed).

कुलं च शीलं च सनाथतां च
     विद्यां च वित्तं च वपुर्वयश्च ।
एतान्गुणान्सप्त विचिन्त्य देया
    कन्या बुधैः शेषमचिंतनीयम् ॥

    vidyAm cha vittaM cha vapuH vayashcha ।
etAn guNAn sapta vichintya deyA
    kanya budhaiH sheSham achintanIyam ॥

Only the following seven attributes of a groom are important – family, character, ownership of property, education, wealth, physique and age. Rest all are immaterial. A wise man will only look at these qualities in a groom before marrying his daughter to him.

काकमांसं शुनोच्छिष्टं स्वल्पं तदपि दुर्लभम् ।
भक्षितेनापि किं तेन तृप्तिर्येन न जायते ॥

kAkamAmsam shunocChiShTam svalpam tadapi durlabham ।
bhakShitenApi kiM tena tRuptiH yena na jAyate ॥

It is meat from a crow. Left over after a dog has feasted on it. It is very little. Even that is not easy to get. If I eat that, it will not even satisfy the slightest hunger. Why should I even eat it if it is not able to quench any hunger? At a higher level of consciouses, all worldly pleasures seem too insignificant as this.
