मनु स्मृति – वृत्ति

ॠतामृताभ्यां जीवेत्तु मृतेन प्रमृतेन वा ।
सत्यानृताभ्यां अपि वा न श्ववृत्त्या कदाचन ॥

- मनु स्मृति

RutAmRutAbhAm jIvet tu mRutena pramRutena vA ।
satya anRutAbhyAm api vA na shvavRuttya kadAchana ॥

- manu smRuti

A household man can lead his life by the following ways. He can get food by gathering grains off a field. Someone may give him food without asking. He may beg for food. He can cultivate crops. He can do trade. But he must not do any servitude (like a dog).

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति – सुचिः

अत्यंतमलिनः कायः नवच्छिद्रसमन्वितः ।
स्रवत्येष दिवारात्रं प्रातःस्नानेन शुद्ध्यति ॥

- बृहत् पराशर स्मृति

atyanmta malinaH kAyaH nava cChidra samanvitaH ।
sravati eSha divA rAtram prAtaH snAnena shuddhyati ॥

- bRuhat parAshara smRuti

This body, which has nine holes is very dirty. Dirt gets into the body through the nine holes all during the day or night. Hence every morning one must wash himself.

याज्ञवल्क्य – उद्योग

न संशयं प्रपद्येत नाकस्मादप्रियं वदेत् ।
नाहितं नानृतं चैव न स्तेनः स्यान्न वार्धुषी ॥

- याज्ञवल्क्य

One must not create confusion. One must not utter harsh words even by mistake. Our words must not hurt others, but not be a lie. One must *not* make a living by stealing or lending money for interest.

- Yajnavalkya

मनुस्मृति – मनःपूतं समाचरेत्

दृष्टिपूतं न्यसेत्पादं पस्त्रपूतं जलं पिबेत् ।
सत्यपूतां वदेद्वाचं मनःपूतं समाचरेत् ॥

- मनुस्मृति

One must set foot only after seeing (cleared after an inspection by the eye). One must drink water only after passing through a cloth. One must utter words that pass through the truth filter. One’s actions must pass the conscience test.

मनुस्मृति – पंथा

चक्रिणो दशमीस्थस्य रोगिणो भारिणः स्त्रियाः ।
स्नातकस्य च राज्ञश्च पंथा देयो वरस्य च ॥

- मनुस्मृति

A pedestrian has to get off the road to leave way for the following: a chariot, old people, the sick, people carrying load, women, a person who just finished his religious studies on his way to get married, a king.
