चतुर्वर्गसंग्रह – दान सत्य शील क्षांति

न दानतुल्यं धनमन्यदस्ति
    न सत्यतुल्यं व्रतमन्यदस्ति ।
न शीलतुल्यं शुभमन्यदस्ति
    न क्षांतितुल्यं हितमन्यदस्ति ॥

na dAnatulayam dhanamanyadasti
    na satyatulyam vratamanyadasti ।
na shIlatulyam shubhamanyadasti
    na kShAnti tulayam hitamanyadasti ॥

There is no better wealth than which is spent in charity. No better penance than truth. Nothing more auspicious than character. Nothing more pleasing than patience.

भामिनीविलास – दान

धत्ते भरं कुसुमपत्रफलावलीनां
    घर्मव्यथां वहति शीतभवां रुजं च ।
यो देहमर्पयति चान्यसुखस्य हेतोः
    तस्मैवदान्यगुरवे तरवे नमोऽस्तु ॥

dhatte bharaM kusumapatraphalAvalInAM
    gharma vyathAm vahati shItabhavAM rujum cha ।
yo dehamarpayati chAnya sukhasya hetoH
    tasmaiva dAnyagurave tarave namostu ॥

A tree is the best example of charity. It bears the weight of the leaves, flowers, fruits and climbers. It protects you from the heat (by providing shade) and cold (by shielding you from cold winds), It doe all these for other people’s happiness. I bow to you the the foremost among charity doers.

द्वावंभसि निवेष्टव्यौ गले बद्ध्वा दृढां शिलाम् ।
धनवंतमदातारं दरिद्रं चातपस्विनम् ॥

dvAvaMbhasi niveShTavyau gale baddhvA dRuDAm shilAm।
dhanavantam adAtAram daridram cha atapasvinam ॥

These two should be thrown into the sea after tying heavy stones tightly to their necks – a wealthy person who does not do charity, a poor guy who does not do penance.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय – दानोपभोगरहिता

दानोपभोगरहिता दिवसा यस्य यान्ति वै ।
स लोहकारभस्त्रेव श्वसन्नपि न जीवति ॥

- सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय

dAna upabhoga rahitA divasA yasya yaanti vai ।
sa lohakAra bhastreva shvasannapi na jIvati ॥

- subhAshitaratnasamucchaya

If a person neither gives his wealth away, nor enjoys it then his living is a big waste. He is only breathing just like the air sac of a blacksmith and not ‘living’.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय – दान

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानान्न तु वित्तस्य संचयात् ।
स्थितिरुच्छैः पयोदानां पयोधीनामधः स्थितिः ॥

gauravam prApyate dAnAn na tu vittasya sanchayAt ।
sthitiH ucchaiH payodAnAm payodhInAm adhaH sthitiH ॥

- subhAShitaratnasamucchaya

One gets respect by giving away wealth in charity, not by accumulating wealth. Clouds that give water has its place high in the sky. The seas that collect water has its place below.
