भागवत – भक्तिः

तावद्भयं द्रविणगेहसुहृन्निमित्तं
    शोकः स्पृहा परिभवो विपुलश्च लोभः ।
तावन्ममेत्यसदवग्रह आर्तिमूलं
    यावन्न तेंऽघ्रिमभयं प्रवृणीत लोकः ॥

tAvadbhayam draviNagehasuhRunnimittam
    shokaH spRuhA paribhavo vipulashcha lobhaH ।
tAvat mameti asat avagraha ArtimUlam
    yAvanna te anghrimabhayam pravRuNIta lokaH ॥

- bhAgavata

Until the day people don’t believe fearlessly in God and worship him, they will suffer in the clutches of ‘attachment’ towards wealth, house, relatives and friends which is the root cause of all misery like fear, grief, greed, humiliation, greed and desire.

नैषधचरिते – आशा मोह

जाग्रतामपि निद्रा यः पश्यतामपि सोंऽधता ।
श्रुते सत्यपि जाड्यं यः प्रकाशेऽपि च यस्तमः ॥

- नैषधचरिते

jAgrataam api nidrA yaH pashyatAmapi so andhatA ।
shrute satyapi jADyam yaH prakAshe api cha yastamaH ॥

- naiShadha charite

When under the influence of desire and attachment a man is sleeping even when awake, blind even when he can see, inanimate even when he can hear the truth. He sees darkness when there is so much light.

भागवत – आत्मानं बहु मन्यते

आत्मजायासुतागारपशुद्रविणबंधुषु ।
निरूढमूलहृदय आत्मानं बहु मन्यते ॥

- भागवत

Atma jAyA suta AgAra pashu draviNa bandhuShu ।
niRUDha mUla hRudaya AtmAnaM bahu manyate ॥

Man gets too much attached to himself, his wife, children, house, pets, wealth and relatives. Once he feels for all these in his heart, he thinks himself to be very important for all these to exist.

लोचन – काय

यदि नामास्य कायस्य यदंतस्तद्बहिर्भवेत् ।
दण्डमादाय लोकोऽयं शुनः काकांश्च वारयेत् ॥

yadi nAmAsya kAyasya yat antaH tat bahiH bhavet ।
danDam AdAya loko ayam shunaH kAkAnshcha vArayet ॥

- lochana

If what is there in this body is turned inside out, then the entire world would be chasing dogs and crows away. For them, body is just meat.

भागवत – प्राराब्ध

यथामयोऽसाधुचिकित्सितो नृणां
    पुनः पुनः सन्तुदति प्ररोहन् ।
एवं मनोऽपक्वकषायकर्म
    कुयोगिनं विध्यति सर्वसंगम् ॥

yathA mayaH asAdhu chikitso nRuNAm
    punaH punaH santudati prarohan ।
evam manaH apakva kaShAya karma
    kuyoginam vidhyati sarva sangam ॥

- bhAgavata

A disease not treated completely, always grows back again and again. Just like that the mind of bad yogi is plagued with consequences of his actions from previous births. This leads him to be attached to everything material.
