Durjana Paddhati

अकरुणत्वमकारणविग्रहः
    परधने परयोषिति च स्पृहा ।
सुजनबन्धुजनेष्वसहिष्णुता
    प्रकृतिसिद्धमिदं हि दुरात्मनाम् ॥

akaruNatvamakAraNavigrahaH
    paradhane parayoShiti ca spRuhA ।
sujanabandhujaneShvasahiShNutA
    prakRutisiddhamidaM hi durAtmanAm ॥

Cruelty, tendency to quarrel without any reason, greed for other people’s money and wives, intolerance towards noble men and relatives – these are the qualities you will find naturally in a wicked person.

दुर्जनः परिहर्तव्यो विद्यया भूषितोऽपि सन् ।
मणिनालङ्कृतः सर्पः किमसौ न भयंकरः ॥

durjanaH parihartavyo vidyayA BUShito&pi san ।
maNinAlaNkRutaH sarpaH kimasau na BayaMkaraH ॥

A wicked person must be kept at arm’s length even if he is highly learned. A cobra is no less dangerous even if it has a pearl on its hood.

जाड्यं ह्रीमति गण्यते, व्रतरुचौ दम्भः, शुचौ कैतवं
    शूरे निर्घृणता मुनौ विमतिता, दैन्यं प्रियालापिनि ।
तेजस्विन्यवलिप्तता, मुखरता वक्तर्यशक्तिः स्थिरे
    तत्को नाम गुणो भवेत्स गुणिनां यो दुर्जनैर्नाङ्कितः ॥

jADyaM hrImati gaNyate, vratarucau damBaH, Sucau kaitavaM
    SUre nirGRuNatA munau vimatitA, dainyaM priyAlApini ।
tejasvinyavaliptatA, muKaratA vaktaryaSaktiH sthire
    tatko nAma guNo Bavetsa guNinAM yo durjanairnANkitaH ॥

Wicked people have a way of seeing something negative in every thing. If a person is modest, they consider him slow and useless. If a person observes his vows and expects others also, then they call him a show-off. If a person is very clean they proclaim that he is deceitful because of his clean manners. They see cruelty in the brave. They call sages irresponsible because they abandoned their families. If a see a person talking very politely, they think he is being a sycophant. They call a spirited person arrogant. They accuse a good orator as being garrulous. They call person who does not take risk as weak person. There is no merit that the wicked will recognize, they see every thing negatively.

लोभश्चेदगुणेन किं, पिशुनता यद्यस्ति किं प्रातकैः
    सत्यं चेत्तपसा च किं, शुचि मनो यद्यस्ति तीर्थेन किम् ।
सौजन्यं यदि किं निजैः, स्वमहिमा यद्यस्ति किं मण्डनैः
    सद्विद्या यदि किं धनैरपयशो यद्यस्ति किं मृत्युना ॥

loBaScedaguNena kiM, piSunatA yadyasti kiM prAtakaiH
    satyaM cettapasA ca kiM, Suci mano yadyasti tIrthena kim ।
saujanyaM yadi kiM nijaiH, svamahimA yadyasti kiM maNDanaiH
    sadvidyA yadi kiM dhanairapayaSo yadyasti kiM mRutyunA ॥

There is no need of any other bad qualities if you have greed. There is no bigger sin than slandering. There is no penance greater than leading a truthful life. If you have purity in mind, there is no need to do any pilgrimage. If one is courteous, he does not need kinsmen. If a person is confident of himself, then he would not want ornaments. If you have sound education, then there is no need of wealth. If a person is infamous, then he does not need death

शशी दिवसधूसरो, गलितयौवना कामिनी
    सरो विगतवारिजं, मुखमनक्षरं स्वाकृतेः ।
प्रभुर्धनपरायणः, सततदुर्गतः सज्जनो
    नृपाङ्गणगतः खलो, मनसि सप्त शल्यानि मे ॥

SaSI divasadhUsaro, galitayauvanA kAminI
    saro vigatavArijaM, muKamanakSharaM svAkRuteH ।
praBurdhanaparAyaNaH, satatadurgataH sajjano
    nRupANgaNagataH Kalo, manasi sapta SalyAni me ॥

There are seven things that worry me when I see them – Moon whose shine is now overcome by the brightness of the Sun, a woman who is way past her youth (not having any body to support her), a lake devoid of the lotuses, a beautiful person who is uneducated, a master intent on hoarding wealth, a noble man who is always in trouble, a wicked person who has access to the king’s courts.

न कश्चिच्चण्डकोपानामात्मीयो नाम भूभुजाम् ।
होतारमपि जुह्वानं स्पृष्टो दहति पावकः ॥

na kaSciccaNDakopAnAmAtmIyo nAma BUBujAm ।
hotAramapi juhvAnaM spRuShTo dahati pAvakaH ॥

No body is a friend of a king who is always angry. The fire used in religious rituals, will even burn the hand that is offering the sacrifices when it comes in contact.

मौनान्मूर्कः, प्रवचनपटुश्चाटुलो जल्पको वा
    धृष्टः पार्श्वे भवति च वसन्दूरतोऽप्यप्रगल्भः ।
क्षान्त्या भीरुर्यदि च सहते प्रायशो नाभिजातः
    सेवाधर्मः परमगहनो योगिनामप्यगम्यः ॥

maunAnmUrkaH, pravacanapaTuScATulo jalpako vA
    dhRuShTaH pArSve Bavati ca vasandUrato&pyapragalBaH ।
kShAntyA BIruryadi ca sahate prAyaSo nABijAtaH
    sevAdharmaH paramagahano yoginAmapyagamyaH ॥

It is very difficult to do the duty of being a servant. If you are silent, then you will be considered dumb. If you talk a lot, you can be seen as flattering or dismissed as a chatterbox. If you are too close, then you are impudent. If you are too far away, then you are timid. If you show a lot of patience, then you are a coward. If you do not show patience, then you are not a man of noble birth. Even the wise sages will not be able to figure out the right behaviour for an ideal servant.

उद्भासिताखिलखलस्य विश्रृङ्खलस्य
    प्राग्जातविस्मृतनिजाधमकर्मवृत्तेः ।
दैवादवाप्तविभवस्य गुणद्विषोऽस्य
    नीचस्य गोचरगतैः सुखमास्यते कैः ॥

udBAsitAKilaKalasya viSrRuNKalasya
    prAgjAtavismRutanijAdhamakarmavRutteH ।
daivAdavAptaviBavasya guNadviSho&sya
    nIcasya gocaragataiH suKamAsyate kaiH ॥

No body can be happy around a wicked person who has exhibited his wicked qualities unfettered, who has forgotten all noble ways of conducting his business, who has earned his wealth by just luck, who is averse to all noble qualities.

आरम्भगुर्वी क्षयिणी क्रमेण
    लघ्वी पुरा वृद्धिमती च पश्चात् ।
दिनस्य पूर्वार्धप्रार्धभिन्ना
    छायेव मैत्री खलसज्जनानाम् ॥

AramBagurvI kShayiNI krameNa
    laGvI purA vRuddhimatI ca paScAt ।
dinasya pUrvArdhaprArdhaBinnA
    CAyeva maitrI KalasajjanAnAm ॥

Friendship with wicked people starts with great vigour and slowly tapers down. On the other hand friendship with noble men starts off very slowly but over time it only improves. They are just as different as the lengths of shadows of a person during the morning and evening times.

मृगमीनसज्जनानां तृणजलसन्तोषविहितवृत्तीनाम् ।
लुब्धकधीवरपिशुना निष्कारणवैरिणो जगति ॥

mRugamInasajjanAnAM tRuNajalasantoShavihitavRuttInAm ।
lubdhakadhIvarapiSunA niShkAraNavairiNo jagati ॥

A deer lives only on grass. A fish lives over water. A noble man lives on just happiness. They do not hurt any body. However, a hunter, a fisherman and a wicked person trouble them without any reason.
