किं नु मे स्यादिदं कृत्वा

किं नु मे स्यादिदं कृत्वा किं नु मे स्यादकुर्वतः ।
इति संचित्य मनसा प्राज्ञः कुर्वीत वा नवा ॥

kim nu me syAt idam kRutvA kim nu me syAt akurvataH ।
iti sinchitya manasA prAjnaH kurvIta vA navA ॥

What would happen if I did so? What would happen if I did not do so? A wise man should always think on these lines and finally “do” or “not do”. A perfect answer to the eternal question “To do or not to do?”

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार – किं धनेन कुबेरस्य

किं धनेन कुबेरस्य सुभाषितगुणेन किं ।
वाचस्पतेश्च दीपेन रवेः सिंधोश्च बिंदुना ॥

kim dhanena kuberasya subhAShita guNena kim ।
vAchaspateH cha dIpena raveH, sindhoH cha bindunA ॥

What good is wealth for Kubera? What good are subhashitas for Bruhaspati (teacher of Gods)? What good is a torch for Sun? What good is a drop of water for the sea?

भागवत – दुस्त्यजं किं धृतात्मनाम्

किं दुःसहं नु साधूनां विदुषां किमपेक्षितम् ।
किमकार्यं कदर्याणां दुस्त्यजं किं धृतात्मनाम् ॥

kim akAryam kadAryANAm suH tyajam kim dhRutAtmanAm ॥

What is intolerable for the virtuous people? What will the scholars long for? What will a rogue think as “undoable”? What will self realized people find hard to give up?

योगवासिष्ठ – व्रणे कीट इवास्वाद्य

किंचित् कांतान्नपानादिकलिलं कोमलं गृहे ।
व्रणे कीट इवास्वाद्य वयः कार्यं न भस्मसात् ॥

kinchit kAntA anna pAnAdi kalilam komalam gRuhe ।
vraNe kITa iva AsvAdya vayaH kAryaM na bhasmasAt ॥

One must not indulge too much in worldly pleasures like damsels, sweets and other eateries. If you stay at home all day savouring these pleasures, then you will be burning your lifetime into ashes.

काष्ठादग्निर्जायते मथ्यमानात्
    भूमिस्तोयं खन्यमाना ददाति ।
सोत्साहानां नास्त्यसाध्यं नराणां
    मार्गारब्धाः सर्वयत्नाः फलंति ॥

kAShThAt agniH jAyate mathyamAnAt
    bhUmiH toyam khanyamAnA dadAti ।
sotsAhAnAM nAsti asAdhyam narANAm
    mArgarabdhAH sarvayatnAH phalanti ॥

Fire can be made from just twigs and nothing else by rubbing together. If one digs the earth with effort, he will get water. If a person has enough enthusiasm, nothing is impossible. When efforts are put in the right direction, then success is guaranteed.
